matter — case management for a law firm
Already a system,
just unwritten.
A 30-year-old law firm ran on diaries, phone calls and a printed cause list. Matter puts hearings, cases, clients, billing and the team in one place.

the problem
Paper,
phone calls.
Interviews with every role, from the principal to the clerks, showed a clear division of work that lived only in people's heads.
the question
Would a senior advocate in his fifties understand this screen without training?
Every decision on this page answers to it.
before design
One loop,
every day.
Mapped before any screen: how a hearing moves through the office, from the cause list to the principal's desk. Every design moment below is one step of it.
key design moments
Decisions,
not features.
Four steps of the loop, and the call behind each.

From paper to live.
The same cause list, now updating itself. Read it by court, the way the paper did, or by person, the way the pen marks did.
One number, whole case.
Adding a case meant filling 10+ fields. Now it takes one: the CNR number. Parties, court and hearing dates fill in from eCourts.
Court to next step in a few taps.
After a hearing, pick what happened and tick what's needed before the next one. Those become tasks, reminders go out, and the principal sees the update without a phone call.

impact
In pilot,
in testing.
The firm is testing it now. Updates ship in rounds, shaped by their feedback, ahead of launch. Their review so far: structure, tracked work, clear ownership.
